Stay on the Sunny Side
June 5 – June 26, 2014
Opening: First Thursday, June 5, 2014 from 6:00PM – 8:00PM

Stay on the Sunny Side is a solo exhibition of low relief, wall-mounted sculptures created by metals artist Jenny Fillius. Stay on the Sunny Side conveys Fillius’ delight in discovery of the found object and her pleasure in reconfiguring and repurposing discarded tin into captivating art objects.

Fillius constructs ornate compositions from fragments of recycled tin. Her crowded studio houses an impressive inventory of deconstructed metal objects that were once toys, containers, religious iconography and such. Fillius’ assemblages are the products of a vivid imagination and robust sense of humor. She mines the unique characteristics (printed, painted or embossed) of the salvaged tin for inspiration, responding nimbly and improvising on sparked ideas. The art also draws inspiration from the artist’s personal experiences, especially a transformative brush with mortality that occurred several years back. Full recovery infused Fillius’ art with a palpable joie de vivre; an air of optimism pervades her work.
