John Stamets
John Stamets earned his B.A. in 1971 from Yale College, where he studied with the late documentary photographer Walker Evans. A Northwest native, Stamets returned to Seattle and immersed himself in photojournalism. In the late '80s, with downtown development transforming the urban landscape, Stamets' interests and practice turned to photographing building construction sites. Over the years, Stamets has documented many significant local projects under construction including, Seattle Central Library (Rem Koolhaas), and Experience Music Project (Frank Gehry). His fascination with the work of these architects has taken him to Chicago and Los Angeles to document other designs under construction. John Stamets is a lecturer at the University of Washington's Department of Architecture where he teaches photography and manages the Architecture Photo Lab for the College of Architecture and Urban Planning. He joined the faculty in 1992 and developed a highly successful course in photography oriented specifically to the needs and interests of future architects and architectural historians.
